Evangelista 'Cyborg' Santos suffered a horrific
fractured skull during his fight with Michael 'Venom' Page at Bellator 158 this weekend.
Santos was left in
excruciating pain as Page landed a vicious knee in the second round of their
welterweight clash at the O2 Arena in London.
The 38-year-old was
quickly rushed from the ring following the brutal knockout and was taken to
hospital.
His ex-wife Cris later
confirmed that Santos had suffered a fractured skull and said on Instagram that
doctors hadn't been able to administer surgery with fear that they would worsen
the injury.
"Fight fans please
say a prayer for my ex-husband Cyborg Santos," Cris wrote.
"Many of you
watched him fight on Spike TV this weekend when he suffered this injury while
fighting in London. Cyborg is still in the hospital in the UK, and they are not
sure when he will be able to fly again. He has not had surgery yet and there is
worry the brain can continue to swell causing more damage.
"Bellator MMA is
supposed to be responsible for all medical procedures needed to fix this injury
from the, however, Cyborg is going to be unable to work for some time and we
will be putting together a GoFundMe for Fight fans wishing To sponsor him and
his family at this difficult time."
Bellator President Scott Coker said Evangelista Santos can rest easier as he recovers from a
devastating knockout blow at this weekend’s Bellator 158 event.
Not only did Coker
confirm that the promotion will take care of any and all medical bills stemming
from “Cyborg” Santos’ skull-crushing
knockout loss to
Michael Page, but the Bellator head said the organization will also pay the
Brazilian slugger his “win” bonus, as well.
“I’ve
been a huge fan of ‘Cyborg’ throughout the many years that he has fought for
us,” Coker stated to MMAjunkie. “The guy brings it every single time out, and
that’s all you can ask for from a fighter. That being said, you never want to
see a fighter sustain an injury like that.
“Bellator
representatives have been present with him at the hospital throughout this
process, and we are taking care of any medical bills that he incurs. In
addition, we are going to go ahead and pay ‘Cyborg’ his win bonus to help him
find a little extra comfort throughout his recovery process, which we hope is a
speedy one.”
